The Smile That Said It All: A First Paddle Success Story

Caleb* was one of our first participants in Southern Pickleball Academy's First Paddle, joining our pilot program last fall. Diagnosed as having high-functioning autism, he enjoys sports but doesn't fit into most athletic groups. His single mom works hard to provide him with opportunities, but sports fees are a burden.
First Paddle has been good for Caleb.
When Caleb started playing, he wouldn't talk or make eye contact. He kept his head down. He often wandered off during instruction. Yet something about this program made him stick with it.
Was it the consistent gentle support of the mentors? The acceptance of the instructor to meet him where he was? The encouragement of his fellow participants as they demonstrated the core values being emphasized each week? The sheer fun of the game?
Or maybe, it was for all these reasons that Caleb fell in love with this game.
Because of the needs-based, no-questions-asked partial scholarships offered, Caleb's mother was able to sign him up for multiple sessions of First Paddle. He repeated our Novice class in the spring and is now participating in the next level of First Paddle, Skill Builders.
Recently, I had the opportunity to watch Caleb during his class. He was actively engaged in the lesson. He listened to the instruction. He didn't wander off, staying focused on building his skill. Without being asked, he helped the mentor chase down balls while waiting his turn. He was still quiet, but he met your eyes and spoke up when needed.
And I saw his smile. His beautiful wide-open smile that said, "I've found my place."
First Paddle instructors and mentors are not trained in special education. But the emphasis on having fun in a supportive, caring environment embedded with core values and paired with professional instruction---well, it made a difference for Caleb.

We want to expand our program to reach more kids like Caleb. Kids who might not otherwise be able to participate due to financial barriers. Kids who don't fit in with other sports. Kids who need a chance to succeed both on the court and in life.
Your support can make a difference. Whether through volunteering, making a one-time or ongoing contribution, or setting up a Qualified Charitable Distribution to benefit First Paddle, you can help write more First Paddle Success stories. All the Calebs out there will thank you.
